1. Don’t Wash Their Bedding

The preparations for moving your pet to a new home begin before you even start packing. It can be tempting, while cleaning and packing, to throw your pet’s bedding and belongings in the wash. However, this is time the let them be. It’s important for your pet to feel comfortable in your new space and having familiar scents on their belongings can go a long way to helping with this.

2. Get Them Used To Their Kennel Or Cage

As pet parents, it’s normal for us to want our four-legged friends to roam free and have as much space as possible. While kennel or cage-training may not be for everyone, it can be very useful when it comes time to move. Try putting your pet in their cage or kennel for small periods leading up to your move. This may help your pet feel less stressed come moving day as their kennel will be a familiar place amidst the madness around them.

3. Prepare Your New Home For Your Pet(s)

Before you let your pet(s) loose on your new home, it’s important to make sure the property is safe and secure. Secure any fences or gates and remove any hazards that may cause your pet harm.

Even if your new property is Fort Knox, sometimes, things happen. Make sure your pet’s microchip information is up to date if they have one and update any collars with your new address. This way, should your pet go for a wander or get lost, someone should be able to help them find their way home.

5. Familiarise Yourself And Your Pet(s) With Your New Neighbourhood

Your pet is not only going to have to deal with a new house but also a whole new neighbourhood. Take them on walks around your new area and familiarise them with their new surroundings. As a pet owner, it’s also important to know where your new vet is located in case of an emergency.
